School Librarians of the Southern Tier - West is a NYLA-SLMS affiliate organization. Several years ago, the group divided into SLST East at the eastern end of the area, centered in the Binghamton area, and SLST West at the western end, centered in the Elmira-Horseheads-Corning area.
SLST West generally meets three or four times per year, with a social hour/dinner, a business meeting, and a program. The officers develop programs that reflect topics of current interest to members and in general offer opportunities for applications in all our members’ libraries. Presentations sometimes involve guest speakers, and other times members present topics reflecting news and events from their own libraries and library programs.
The organization advocates professional membership in NYLA/SLMS and ALA/AASL. We also advocate attendance at professional meetings and conferences including NYLA, SLMS, NY Leadership Conference, ALA, AASL, and Books Abound – state, national and regional library conferences. In order to help members attend state and national meetings, the group offers a scholarship program which offers partial support for attendance.
